Catching products created in Square after your last migration

6 min read · Updated September 2026

Re-sync Products is built to answer one question fast: what's changed in Square since I last checked - without re-scanning your entire catalog every time. There are a few real mechanics behind it worth knowing, including one genuine gotcha around unsaved settings.

Two scopes to choose from

  • Only what changed in Square since the last sync

The default and fastest option - checks against the date/time of your last sync.

  • My entire Square product catalog

Slower, but checks everything regardless of when it last changed.

The checkpoint dropdown

  • Pulled from your last 20 completed product jobs

"Check for changes since" lists your last 20 completed product-catalog jobs - full migrations and past re-syncs alike - each formatted like "Sep 3, 2:14 PM - Full migration (1,204 imported)" or "...- Re-sync (42 imported)".

  • Picking an earlier one is always safe

"This will re-check products that may already have been migrated in a later run too - that's expected and safe. Anything already in Shopify is matched and refreshed in place, never duplicated or re-created." Your automatic since-last-sync tracking still advances normally afterward, regardless of which checkpoint you picked for this one run.

The preview before you commit

  • Products to refresh

"{count} product(s) will be refreshed" - always shown first.

  • New products found

Either "{count} new product(s) will be created", "{count} new product(s) found - not created (check the box above to include them)", or "No new products found since the last sync."

  • Include new products

A checkbox - "Also create products added to Square since {date}" - off by default, so a re-sync never silently creates products unless you opt in.

What actually gets refreshed on a matched product

  • Everything your field selection covers

Price, variants, inventory-linked fields, images, description, tags, and metafields can all be refreshed on an already-migrated product - it's rebuilt through the exact same builder a fresh migration uses, filtered only by whichever fields you currently have selected to migrate.

  • Only products unSquared itself already created

Unlike a full migration, re-sync never falls back to matching an untracked Shopify product by SKU, barcode, or handle - it only ever touches products carrying its own Square-tracking metafield. A product with no such match is skipped entirely, unless you've checked "include new products," in which case it's created fresh instead.

Re-sync submits your live settings, not your last-saved ones

This is a real, easy-to-miss difference from a full migration. On the Products settings screen, several general settings (Include Archived, Include Deleted, publish channels, global tags, and others) are deliberately submitted from whatever you last clicked "Save Settings" on - flipping a toggle without saving has no effect on a full "Migrate to Shopify" run. Re-sync Products doesn't follow that rule: it submits whatever those toggles currently show on screen, saved or not. If you've changed one of those settings but haven't saved it yet, a re-sync run picks up your unsaved change while a full migration wouldn't - worth double-checking what's actually showing on the form before you click Re-sync.

Archived and deleted items in Square

  • Only touched if you've turned those on

A product deleted or archived in Square since your last sync is only fetched (and, if matched, refreshed and marked archived in Shopify) when Include Deleted / Include Archived are turned on. With both off, re-sync never even sees those items, so nothing changes for them either way.

Collections and discounts are hard-excluded, not just skipped

"Refresh products already migrated to Shopify with the latest data from Square using your current migration settings. Collections and discounts are never updated." This is enforced explicitly - re-sync forces both off regardless of what's saved in your normal Product Catalog settings, so it's not simply that they're unmentioned, they're actively excluded every time. If you need those refreshed, that only happens through a full Product Catalog migration.

The report looks almost identical to a full migration's

  • Same job type, marked with a badge

A re-sync produces the same kind of Product Catalog report as a full migration, just with a small "Re-sync" badge on the overview and in your migration history list.

  • Two extra lines, and two omitted ones

The report adds a "Re-sync scope" line (entire catalog, or changes since a given date) and an "Include newly added products" line - and leaves the Collections/Discounts settings lines out entirely, rather than showing them as "No," since those aren't a per-run choice on a re-sync - they're always excluded.
