Connect Your Square Account
The very first thing you see after installing unSquared is a welcome screen, not a settings page - it explains what's about to happen before asking you to connect anything.
Welcome to unSquared
Right after install, you land on a "Welcome to unSquared" screen with a short preview of the whole flow - Connect Square, Configure & Preview, Migrate, Review the Report - plus a summary of what you can migrate. Clicking Get Started takes you to the real connection screen.

Connect Square, then Configure & Preview, Migrate, and Review the Report.
Connecting Square
The Connect to Square screen explains upfront that access is read-only - unSquared never writes back to Square. Before you click Connect, you can see exactly what you're authorizing:
That's the complete list - seven read-only permissions, nothing more. You're then taken to Square's own sign-in page to approve them, and redirected straight back into unSquared once you do.
Choose What to Migrate
Once Square is connected, you're asked one question: what do you want to bring over? This choice drives your whole dashboard - and you can always come back and change it later from Settings.
Four independent options are shown as clickable cards: Product Catalog, Customers, Gift Cards, and Product URL Redirects. Pick any combination - each one runs on its own, whenever you're ready, not all at once.
Under the cards you will see two buttons, and you finish setup by clicking one of them. Preview Data opens a free, read-only preview of a small sample of your own data, laid out the way Shopify would show it - nothing is created and no plan is needed - and setup is finished from the button at the bottom of the preview. Skip to Dashboard goes straight to your dashboard.
Configure & Preview Your Product Catalog
Product Catalog is the deepest migration type, so it gets the most configuration - but everything beyond the basics is optional, and nothing runs until you explicitly click Migrate.
Location Mapping
Before anything else, match each Square location to the Shopify location it should feed inventory into - this is required, not optional, before your first Product Catalog migration. A location left unmapped means its products migrate with 0 stock everywhere until you fix it. If you map or add a location later, click Sync Inventory afterward - unSquared automatically re-checks every already-migrated product and activates stock wherever a location is now mapped.
Field Mapping
Title, Variants, and Price are always included and can't be turned off. Everything else - description, SKU, barcode, weight, images, tags, vendor, SEO fields, and several behind-the-scenes detail groups - is a simple on/off toggle per row.
Taxonomy Mapping
Each Square category can be matched to Shopify's standard product category list. Click Auto-suggest for a best-guess match on every category at once, then review before saving - matches are labeled Mapped · Auto, Mapped · Manual, Uncategorized, or Not Mapped, so it's always clear which ones you actually reviewed yourself.
Ready to Migrate
Before the Migrate button does anything, you see a plain-language summary of exactly what will happen - how many products, whether every Square location is mapped, what your Discounts and Collections settings will do - plus an explicit opt-in toggle if you want unSquared to overwrite any existing Shopify products that match by SKU, barcode, or handle (off by default).
Run the Migration & Get Your Report
Once you click Migrate, everything happens live - safe to cancel or re-run anytime, and to pause too outside of very large bulk runs.
Live progress
A running counter shows exactly how many records have been updated, skipped, or failed, with Cancel available the entire time - Pause too, except for very large runs (over 2,000 products or 5,000 customers) that switch into a faster batch mode, where only Cancel is available. Pausing stops at a safe point without losing anything already processed; cancelling ends the run there - nothing already migrated is ever undone.
Migration History
Every run - past, in progress, or scheduled - is listed here with its date, status, and record counts, so you never lose track of what happened and when.
Reading the Migration Report
Every run produces a downloadable report explaining every single record - migrated, skipped, or failed, with the reason. A "Skipped" row is usually expected, not an error - it typically means that record was already migrated, or nothing about it had actually changed. A "Failed" row states exactly what Square or Shopify rejected, so you can fix the issue at the source; re-running afterward only ever processes what's still outstanding, never duplicating what already succeeded.
Customers
Runs independently from Product Catalog and from the other migration types below - its own settings, its own pre-flight review, its own history.
Choose whether to bring over email marketing consent, addresses, birthdays, and notes, and whether to create a Shopify customer segment. Customers with neither an email nor a phone number are skipped by default, since Shopify needs at least one way to identify them - you can opt in to migrate them anyway.
Gift Cards
Only active Square gift cards with a balance still on them come across, with the exact same code so customers can redeem it immediately. "Link Gift Cards to Customers by email" matches each card to an existing Shopify customer by email, and then you choose one of two options: "Link silently, do not email" (recommended, the default) attaches the card to the customer's record without sending anything, while "Link and email the customer" lets Shopify send each customer its standard gift-card email containing their code. Every gift card setting starts off until you turn it on and save; leave linking off to migrate every eligible card unlinked - you can still save the Square customer's name, email, and ID on the card's note for manual reference later. You can also schedule the migration for a specific date and time up to 14 days out, useful for timing the cutover precisely. Either way, Migration Settings has to be saved at least once first - even if you leave every toggle off - before Migrate or Schedule Migration will run.
URL Redirects
This is the one migration type with an extra safety step built in: the Migrate button stays disabled until you've downloaded a Full Preview (CSV) of every match and ticked a box confirming you've reviewed it - including anything flagged "Needs review".
Product Weight & Online Price
This is the one part of unSquared that isn't fully automatic - because Square's API simply doesn't share weight or an original/sale price with any app, including unSquared. It's a deliberate, optional extra step, not a gap in the connection.
Exporting from Square
unSquared includes a built-in "How to Export" guide with the exact real steps for pulling the right file from your Square Dashboard - which menu to open, what to export, and which columns to keep.
Uploading the file
Upload the CSV or Excel file you exported, and unSquared matches each row to the right Shopify variant automatically - using a hidden tracking value it saved when the product was first migrated, falling back to SKU if that's missing. Keep the file trimmed to just the Token, Weight, Weight Unit, SKU, and Online Sale Price columns for large catalogs - unSquared never reads anything else, and it shrinks the file well under the 20MB upload limit.
Reviewing before you apply
Before anything changes in Shopify, you see exactly which variants matched and what will update - weight, price, or both, depending on what your file contains. Nothing is written until you click Apply, and you can re-upload anytime afterward to correct values later.
Staying in Sync
A migration doesn't have to be a one-time event. Once your initial move is done, two tools keep Shopify current with whatever keeps changing in Square.
Inventory Sync
Run a free Pre-Sync Report first to compare Square and Shopify stock levels side by side with no changes made - then sync for real whenever you're ready, for whichever Square locations you choose.
Scheduling ahead
Instead of syncing right away, switch to "Schedule for later" and pick a date and time up to 14 days out, in your local timezone. It fires automatically in the background at that time - you don't need to keep the page open - and its progress card is labeled "Scheduled run" so it's easy to tell apart from one you started manually. You can cancel a pending schedule anytime before it runs.
Re-sync Products & Customers
Re-sync Products lets you check for just what changed in Square since your last run - much faster on a large catalog - or re-check your entire catalog if you'd rather be thorough. Re-sync Customers works the same way, simply catching anyone new since your last completed run.
Settings & Notifications
One settings page covers your whole connection: Square account status, what you're migrating, and how (and whether) unSquared emails you about it.
From here you can refresh or disconnect your Square connection, change which data types you're migrating, turn on email alerts for migration activity or Square connection issues, and see which version of the app you're running and who built it.
Getting Help
If you get stuck at any point, there's a direct path to the answer - most of it written from the exact same real screens covered on this page.
