After you connect Square and choose what to migrate, unSquared offers a free preview. It reads a small sample of your real Square data and shows how it would look in Shopify, without creating anything, changing anything in Square, or needing a plan. This guide explains where to find it, what each part shows, and what a preview cannot tell you.
Free, and it changes nothing
The preview only reads from Square. Nothing is created, changed or deleted in Shopify, nothing is changed in Square, and it does not start a migration, appear in your Migration History, change your dashboard checklist or use any part of your plan. There is nothing to clean up afterward.
How to open it
- 1Connect Square and choose what to migrate
Tick the data types you want on the Get Started screen. The preview covers Products, Customers, Gift Cards and URL Redirects.
- 2Click Preview Data
It sits beside Skip to Dashboard, and you have to click one of the two to finish setup. Your selection is saved, then the preview opens. Setup is not finished yet, so your dashboard menu stays hidden until you finish.
- 3Browse the sections and open any row
Select View details on a product, a variant, a customer or a gift card to see the full Shopify-style page for it.
- 4Finish setup at the bottom of the preview
Click Finish setup and go to Dashboard to carry on, or Finish setup and see the plan if you want to look at pricing. If you close the app first, Get Started shows again with your choices ticked, and either button finishes it. Refresh sample reads a fresh sample from Square at any time.
- 5Look again later from Settings
After setup, open Settings and use the Preview Data card to see a fresh sample again. It is a view-only second look with a Back to Settings button and nothing else, and it only shows while Square is connected and you have chosen a type the preview can show.
What the sample covers
| Section | What you see | How the sample is chosen |
|---|---|---|
| Products | Up to 15 products, each opening into a Shopify-style product page | The first 15 active products Square returns |
| Collection | The Square category most of those products share, as the Shopify collection it would become, with its metafields | Taken from the sample products |
| Discount | One active Square discount as the Shopify discount it would become: value, dates, what it applies to, minimum purchase and tags | Prefers a discount that applies to the sample products |
| Customers | Up to 10 customers, each opening into a Shopify-style customer page | The first customers a real migration would bring over (no email or phone means skipped, as in a real run) |
| Gift Cards | Up to 10 active gift cards with masked codes, values, expiry and customer | Active cards only, because Shopify accepts nothing else |
| URL Redirects | Old Square Online links beside the new Shopify links, up to 10 examples | Matched from your Square Online site's page list |
Inside View details
- A Shopify-style product page
Description, media, options, status, tax, vendor, product type, collections, tags, sales channels and the search engine listing, laid out the way Shopify admin shows them.
- Every variant, on its own page
Select View details on a variant to see its options, price, cost, SKU, barcode, inventory, weight, shipping, its own image and other images, and its metafields. Back to product takes you back.
- Every metafield unSquared can save
Fields with nothing in Square are listed too and marked Empty, so you can see what exists and what does not. Optional ones, such as the extra variant image list, are labelled Optional because they are only saved when the matching setting is on.
- Customers and gift cards
A customer opens into contact details, default address, note, tags and metafields. A gift card shows its masked code in the list, and the full code, value, expiry and note in the detail view.
Gift cards are permanent
Only active Square gift cards are migrated and previewed. Once a gift card is imported into Shopify it can only be deactivated, not edited or deleted, so the preview is a good chance to check them first.
What a preview cannot tell you
It uses unSquared's default settings, shows optional customer and gift card details as if they were turned on, and shows inventory as the quantity unSquared would set once you map your locations. It cannot ask Shopify to accept anything, so it cannot show a product that already exists in your store or a record Shopify rejects. If your account has no Square Online store, the URL Redirects part simply says so. The report from the real migration lists every item that was created, skipped or failed.
Ready to choose what to migrate?
After the preview, each migration page walks you through its settings and counts before anything runs.
