Why Products and Customers can't be migrated at the same time

3 min read · Updated October 2026

unSquared now runs one of Products or Customers at a time. If you start a Products migration, the Customers migration buttons turn off until it finishes, and the same happens the other way around. This guide explains why, what you will see on screen, and what can still run alongside.

Why this rule exists

Shopify allows only one large "bulk" data transfer per store at a time. Both a big Products migration (more than 2,000 products) and a big Customers migration (more than 5,000 customers) switch into that bulk mode automatically, and unSquared can't know that at the moment you click Start. To keep a run from failing partway through, the second migration is blocked as soon as the first one starts, whether the first one is waiting to start, running or paused.

What you will see

  • On the page that is blocked

An amber "Another migration is running" banner explains which migration is active. Migrate (and Re-sync Customers on the Customers page) is greyed out until it finishes.

  • Re-sync Products

The button is not greyed out. If you click it while Customers is active, a red message appears and nothing starts.

  • If the page was already open

A page you opened before the other migration started can still look clickable. Clicking Migrate or Re-sync shows the same red message and nothing is started, so you can't start a second run by accident.

  • When it clears

As soon as the other migration finishes, fails or is cancelled, reload the page and the buttons work again. Nothing needs to be reset.

What to do

  1. 1
    Start the larger one first

Start whichever migration you want finished first, usually Products, then Customers.

  2. 2
    Watch the live progress card

Open the running migration's page, or the dashboard, to see when it completes. You don't need to keep the browser open.

  3. 3
    Start the other one afterwards

When the first run shows as completed, reload the other page and click Migrate.

Paused counts as active

A paused migration still holds its place, so the other one stays blocked. Resume it and let it finish, or cancel it, to free the other migration up.

Not sure what to migrate first?

Products, Customers, Gift Cards and URL Redirects each have their own page and settings. Here's how to pick your starting point.
